Coking Portfolio Emissions Upgrades

This $150 million scope consisted of conceptual engineering, front-end engineering, and detailed design to meet an issued environmental consent decree at three similar yet unique metallurgical coking facilities. Collaboration and intense design development between the client research and development team and the project team produced a first-of-a-kind solution for the complex problem. A "spare" heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) is connected to the existing oven batteries and HRSG installations via a new gas sharing duct. Extensive flow modeling was completed to ensure that the new duct's transient flow would not create a safety issue with the operating ovens. Once a solution was selected and feasibility confirmed, a FEED package was generated. Finally, a detailed design package was developed for the refractory lined ductwork, HRSG, and related infrastructure and utilities necessary to allow continuous operation of the facility without a permit violation.
